Support a Patient

Hospice Malta supports 1300 patients and their families annually.

Palliative Care is provided through an interdisciplinary team of professionals at the patient’s home.  The team’s main objective is to alleviate suffering and increase the patient’s quality of life medically, emotionally and spiritually.  Hospice needs an estimated €1.3 million yearly to deliver it’s services

All Hospice Services are delivered completely free of charge.

The Typical Patient

The following three scenarios depict actual patients.  Each case was assessed by our team and given an individualised care plan, tailor made for his/her requirements.

(Names have been changed to preserve the patient’s anonymity and  images are for illustration purposes only.)

Carmen is  receiving community care services through individualised care plan from the key worker (nurse)  who is following her up periodically. She is also benefitting from DTU online sessions as well as physiotherapy to help her with mobility. Equipment is also loaned to her for further support, dignity and independence. Transport is  offered to facilitate attendance at  DTU and  to alleviate pressure on family members when her hospital visits are due. The patient also makes use of “On Call” services after office hours where she is given advice and assistance after office hours and during weekends.

Judy requires regular intervention and support from her key worker, doctor as well as emotional support provided to her and to her family by a  social worker as well as from Hospice psychologists. Complementary sessions are also required to alleviate certain symptoms. Judy benefits from a number of hours weekly through the carers’ support service at his home. Her family also attend the Hospice support group intervention to help  manage the emotional distress and anxieties associated with Judy’s illness.

Margaret requires intensive intervention from the interdisciplinary team with particularly frequent visits/assessments by doctors and nurses. Hospice provided equipment for pain management and symptom control  as well as carers’ 24/7 support. She also utilises the after-hours on call service and both her and her family receives spiritual support from the Hospice Chaplain.
