About the Role

The Security Guard supports the safe, secure and welcoming operation of St Michael Hospice. The role is responsible for monitoring access, carrying out routine patrols, assisting visitors and contractors, supporting porter duties, and responding appropriately to incidents while upholding the dignity, confidentiality and comfort of patients and their families.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the CEO and/or his delegates, the Security Guard is responsible for the day-to-day security and porter operations at St Michael Hospice, including:

  • Patrol internal and external areas regularly to keep the premises safe and secure.
  • Monitor entrances, exits, CCTV and alarm systems, keeping all access points and locks secure.
  • Maintain control of premises keys in line with Hospice Malta procedures.
  • Respond calmly to emergencies, disputes, suspicious activity or safety concerns.
  • Record incidents and actions taken clearly and accurately, escalating to the relevant manager, coordinator or emergency service when needed.
  • Assist in protecting people, property and assets from theft, damage, fire and other risks.
  • Welcome and guide visitors, contractors and delivery personnel professionally, confirming appointments and escorting them as required.
  • Support reception with car park access and visitor flow, and coordinate deliveries and porter duties as needed.
  • Assist with mortuary-related procedures respectfully and in line with internal protocols.
  • Comply with Hospice Malta’s policies, health and safety requirements and professional standards.
  • Respect the dignity, rights, privacy and confidentiality of patients, families, visitors and staff at all times.
  • Carry out staff searches only when authorised, and undertake other duties as reasonably directed by management.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the role, as reasonably directed by management.

Attributes

  • Sound knowledge of security procedures, access control, patrols, incident reporting and emergency response, including fire safety and evacuation.
  • Strong observation skills, attention to detail and situational awareness.
  • A clear, confident communicator, both verbally and in writing, with accurate incident reporting.
  • Compassionate and respectful towards patients, families, visitors and colleagues, with a real appreciation for dignity and confidentiality in a care setting.
  • Discreet and reliable, especially in sensitive or challenging situations.
  • Comfortable working independently and collaborating with colleagues across departments.
  • Sound organisational and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.

Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory

  • Valid Private Guard Licence.
  • Clean police conduct.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a similar security, porter or facilities support role.

Desirable

  • First Aid certification.
  • Basic IT literacy, including use of email.
  • Good understanding of and ability to speak Maltese and English.
