St Michael Hospice

a much-needed first Hospice Complex for palliative care services.

Hospice Malta, provides all of its services free of charge to patients in Malta and Gozo. Guided by the philosophy and principles of palliative care as outlined by the WHO, Hospice Malta is dedicated to patient-centered care that alleviates pain, manages physical symptoms, and addresses emotional, psycho-social, and spiritual needs. Bereavement support is also an integral part of its services. In the past year alone, we have supported over 1,500 patients and their families, offering essential assistance during their most challenging times.

In addition to patient care, Hospice Malta is committed to the promotion and education of palliative care. Our education unit offers sessions at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, alongside in-service training for staff and volunteers to ensure the highest quality of care.

St Michael Hospice, Malta’s first palliative care complex, represents a transformative milestone in Hospice Malta’s 36-year legacy of holistic care. This new complex will provide essential in-patient facilities and expanded services, delivering comprehensive support to patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses. The refurbished building served as the main premises for Hospice Malta, enhancing the already well-established community palliative services that had been offered since 1989.

St Michael Hospice will also include an In-Patient palliative care unit, which is not yet operational but will begin admitting patients in the near future. The facility also involved the expansion of existing therapy services and the introduction of new Out-Patient clinics. Additionally, it aimed to strengthen its educational wing, supporting the exchange of expertise with other Hospices across Europe and beyond.

Day Therapy Unit

At the heart of its services lies the Day Therapy Unit (DTU), aimed at optimising patients’ overall quality of life. This unique space provides a blend of physical, emotional, and social care in an informal, relaxed, and friendly atmosphere, where patients can connect, engage, and receive medical support.

Patients have access to a variety of therapeutic sessions, including physiotherapy, complementary therapy, and hydrotherapy, alongside emotional, spiritual, and religious support. Cultural talks, music therapy, arts and crafts sessions, and other social activities are also regularly organised. These include group outings, meal preparation and sharing, all of which help foster connection and offer meaningful engagement, while providing much-needed respite for families and carers.

The services focus on preventing further medical complications, providing comprehensive medical and psychosocial assessments, and delivering both individual and group interventions. The Unit also provides indirect support to families, offering a safe and supportive environment away from home, with direct psychosocial and bereavement support available for loved ones.

Patients are typically referred to the DTU by their Hospice Nurse, who assesses their physical and psychological condition, as well as their home environment, to ensure a smooth transition to and from the unit. Once admitted, an initial assessment is conducted during their first visit, followed by continuous evaluations to tailor the care plan to their evolving needs. This holistic approach ensures optimal palliative care outcomes for every patient.
