Hospice Malta, a voluntary organisation offering its services free of charge, providing and promoting palliative care for those suffering from conditions such as cancer, motor-neuron disease, end-of-life cardiac, respiratory, renal and liver diseases, has just received a donation from The Alfred Mizzi Foundation. The donation will be put towards the establishment of St Michael Hospice, the first state-of-the-art complex in Malta dedicated entirely to providing comprehensive palliative care.

“As a  Foundation which focuses on social solidarity and supporting the weak and vulnerable it is our pleasure to be able to contribute towards St Michael Hospice. The project has the potential to make such an immense difference in the community. Many Maltese have had family members who have relied on the specialist care received by Hospice Malta which in line with our principles is open to all, irrelevant of creed, culture or social background and therefore we are very happy to be supporting this ambitious project. ,” said Mr. Julian Sammut, from the Alfred Mizzi Foundation.

St Michael Hospice, formerly known as Adelaide Cini, will become the main premises for Hospice Malta and is expected to help further enhance the already established palliative community services provided by Hospice since 1989. St Michael Hospice will house an in-patient palliative care unit, complementing all the other services for a more comprehensive approach. The present-day therapy services will be expanded and a number of out-patient clinics will also be introduced. St Michael Hospice will also enhance its educational wing which will open many opportunities to exchange expertise with other Hospices across Europe and beyond.

“St Michael Hospice is a necessity and the journey to fund this project that will see Malta’s first Hospice Complex become a reality is a long one. Thanks to donations such as this of The Alfred Mizzi Foundation, we will be able to renovate this property to exacting standards, comparable to the best hospices abroad which we have already visited. We would like thank them for their support!,” said Maria Gatt, Chairperson at Hospice Malta.

She said that with Hospice Malta being an NGO and with all their services offered free of charge, they constantly look for assistance on both an individual and business level so that operations continue to serve the people that need it most. Through this donation towards St Michael Hospice, The Alfred Mizzi Foundation responded in a tangible manner towards the support patients require during these challenging times. The donation will go a long way to helping the future patients of Hospice.
